Students enrolled at van Asch Deaf Education Centre’s Core School can access a number of educational facilities, programmes and quality teaching to meet the specific learning needs of deaf and hearing-impaired students.
Our Core School is spread across four sites in Christchurch. We have a mutually beneficial relationship with our host schools and operate as 'a School within a School’

High School

Our High School works across three sites; van Asch Deaf Education Centre’s grounds in Sumner,   Hagley Community College and Hillmorton High School. Having a high school across three sites, enables creative and flexible programmes to best meet the variety of needs of deaf learners. Most students spend their time at one or other campus, while some students will access programmes at two sites.

Hagley Hub

Hagley Community College is a highly inclusive High School based near the Centre of Christchurch. Senior deaf and hearing-impaired students (Y11-13) enrolled at van Asch Core School can access a range of engaging NZQA courses offered at Hagley Community College. Many students are supported by specialist staff in these classes and in our Deaf satellite class at this campus. Students accessing these courses are also supported by 1:1 and small group teaching in our local curriculum; Language, Literacy and Deaf Studies programmes.

Sumner Hub

At Sumner we offer exciting and flexible programmes to meet the specific needs of a range of deaf and hearing-impaired learners. Students are supported by specialist staff to access the NZ National Curriculum through programmes that have a strong focus from our Local Curriculum; Literacy, Language and Deaf Studies. These programmes are complemented by Te Kura- Correspondence School, SPEC (South Pacific Education Competencies), transition and work experience programmes.

Hillmorton High School
A group of year 10 students started at Hillmorton High School at the start of 2015. Students attend mainstream classes with support as well as classes in the satellite unit.

Primary School

Wharenui Hub

Our Primary School class is based at Wharenui School. Wharenui School is a highly inclusive full primary school in the suburb of Riccarton.

Enrolled students are provided with high-quality individualised teaching and learning programmes that integrate our local curriculum; Language, Literacy and Deaf Studies with the NZ National curriculum. The Ministry of Education is currently underway with building a purpose-built two classroom block, break out space, meeting room and therapy rooms for our staff and students. This should be completed at the end of 2012.
